Psalms 89

I am still always surprised as I read through the Psalms at just how many prophesies of Christ are scattered throughout; the Psalms are filled with them! Again in Psalm 89, a maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite, we see God’s promise to establish David’s line forever, and “his throne as long as the heavens endure.” And of course this promise has been fulfilled in Jesus Christ!

1 Chronicles 4:9-10

“Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, ‘I gave birth to him in pain.’ Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.’ And God granted his request.” 1 Chronicles 4:9-10

About two decades ago a little book called “The Prayer of Jabez” skyrocketed to the top of the Christian book charts. It is interesting that this little five sentence paragraph, two verses in 1 Chronicles 4, is included right smack in the middle of all the endless boring begats. Jabez’s prayer is actually begging God for mercy, that his name (which means “pain”) would not become reality. “And God granted his request.” !!

There are the five “enlarge my territory” things I pray to receive from God every day: I ask for wisdom, discernment, discipline, humility, and a heart that loves God above all else. If God grants me these requests, I will be rich indeed!
