“Narcissism” is today’s trendy word for “prideful.”
It’s nothing new… it first appeared on our planet in the Garden of Eden when the father of pride convinced Eve that she didn’t need God… she could become like God herself…
All of us encounter this same seductive lie. Every single one of us must choose which tree to eat from…
We can eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil along with most of the rest of the world. This fruit is narcissism. It is pride. This fruit convinces us that WE know best. WE are smart enough to figure it all out with our human pea brains. WE are good enough to save ourselves by following all of the “rules.” WE don’t need saving. We don’t need God.
Or we can choose to eat from the tree of LIFE… which is Jesus Christ Himself. ALL of creation was created through Him and by Him (John 1:1-4). He is our Father, protector, deliverer, our peace and fullness of joy. He invites each of us to partake of His fruit of LIFE, to enter into RELATIONSHIP with Him, to LIVE in the freedom and victory that He offers us.
What’s the catch?
The catch is that we have to lay aside this arrogant idea that we are enough all by ourselves, that we don’t need Him or His bothersome plans for us, that we can figure it all out without His help, that we are in control of our own destinies. We have to stop eating the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil…
