After Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, God met them at Mount Sinai. He spoke to them directly from the midst of a great earthquake, storms and fire (Deuteronomy 5:23-29). The Israelites were terrified and begged God not to speak directly them but to speak through Moses instead. Otherwise, they feared they would die… God is too powerful, too scary!
God was actually pleased with the Israelites’ request. It demonstrated a healthy fear of the LORD. They were acknowledging, for once, how big and mighty and, yes, terrifying, God really is.
Yes God loves us. He really does! Yes He allows us to talk directly to Him. But may we never forget how BIG and MIGHTY He truly is. May we never forget how small and simple we are when compared to such a mighty God, a God powerful enough to create the entire universe!
